Despite being completed in 1990, the Camosun College Dental Health Building had since experienced considerable challenges due to a failing envelope. To support the growing popularity of the dental program, the building also required extensive accessibility upgrades. In collaboration with Camosun College and a team of engineering consultants, we designed a cohesive, sustainable solution that achieves the project goals, responds to the Campus Master Plan, and reflects the essence of the Landsdowne Campus character.
Our approach centred on a mandate to preserve the building’s original architectural integrity while addressing envelope and accessibility deficiencies and integrating contemporary design elements. In opting to retrofit the existing structure, Camosun College demonstrated its commitment to sustainability by mitigating the significant environmental footprint associated with new construction. Despite inherent challenges associated with retrofit projects, our team adeptly navigated through unforeseen conditions and overcame adversity as it emerged.
