The pavilion and front entrance, with its human-scaled, cantilevered canopy embraced by the courtyard’s concrete walls, are nestled into the existing slope and framed by the hospital. The glazed pavilion, which functions as a waiting space, is wrapped in a façade of open wood slats that filters light into the interior while allowing views out to the garden. The interplay of shadows and the calming, sensory reminder of sun and breeze in the garden make the Centre feel more like a retreat than a healthcare facility.
Waiting areas, resource areas and education classrooms are carefully arranged and scaled to ensure privacy. This award-winning Centre is a design prototype for community-centered care and is already a cherished facility.
