The concept of transformation through nature, learning, and connection guided our design approach. The project harnesses the power of nature not only as inspiration but also as a functional component of the space. Sustainable finishes, natural materials, and biophilic design elements bring the outdoors in, fostering an environment that encourages mindfulness and well-being. Features such as moss-like carpeting and cedar wood—materials native to the region—reinforce this connection, while maximizing natural light helps create a warm and inviting atmosphere within the concrete framework of the existing structure.

The central atrium, reimagined as the building’s collaborative heart, serves as a dynamic space for gathering and connection. Acoustic baffles, designed to resemble wood, enhance sound management while blending seamlessly with the organic aesthetic. Exposed structural elements and corten steel detailing maintain the building’s industrial character, creating a balance of authenticity and modernity.

Sustainability is embedded in our design, encouraging users to adopt environmentally responsible practices both consciously and unconsciously. The space features seismic and accessibility upgrades to enhance resilience, as well as energy-efficient systems that contribute to the university’s net-zero ambitions. By designing with sustainability at its core, the project aligns with both Indigenous values of stewardship and UVic’s broader commitment to environmental responsibility.

By transforming the D-Wing into a space that celebrates Indigenous perspectives, sustainable practices, and innovation, the new ACET Research Headquarters creates an environment where researchers, students, and community members can find a place to belong and contribute. This space represents the intersection of history and progress, designed to honour our past while inspiring the future.
