Zeidler Architecture is delighted to announce that we are collaborating with Cadillac Fairview (CF) on the replacement of the CF Toronto Eaton Centre galleria skylight roof.

This $60 million project will see the existing structure upgraded with a modern structural glazing system, improving energy efficiency while preserving its distinct architectural expression. Taking cues from the renowned Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, the skylight and imposing atrium it encloses are central to the architectural vision of the centre. The landmark interior street at CF’s flagship retail property seamlessly blends with the surrounding urban fabric, creating vital connections in Toronto’s downtown core.

Constructability is a major driver for the galleria replacement project, particularly the focus on reducing impact to the ongoing operations of the bustling complex. Delivered in two phases, the galleria skylight replacement is a collaborative undertaking between Zeidler Architecture and Read Jones Christoffersen (RJC) consulting engineers, with EllisDon overseeing construction. “As the original architects of the galleria, we’re honoured to play a continuing role in one of the city’s most iconic buildings. This revitalization will ensure the skylight roof is fit-for-purpose and sustainable in the long term, all while retaining its original architectural splendor,” says David Collins, Partner at Zeidler Architecture.

Flanked by two subway stations and major retail tenants, the CF Toronto Eaton Centre continues to be one of the busiest shopping centres in North America with over 50 million visitors annually. As CF continues to upgrade and transform the Centre, Zeidler’s design builds on key planning principles —an interconnected public realm and human scaled spaces within the grandness of the development.

Since the completion of the centre in 1979, Zeidler Architecture has delivered multiple interior and exterior upgrades, vestibule and parking garage improvements, the soon-to-be-opened BMO Urban Campus, and the award-winning CF Toronto Eaton Centre Bridge. Beyond the galleria skylight replacement, Zeidler Architecture’s ongoing projects at the centre include 2 Queen West and accessibility upgrades throughout the centre.
