CF Toronto Eaton Centre Bridge wins Toronto Urban Design Award
September 15, 2021Zeidler is delighted to announce that the CF Toronto Eaton Centre Bridge has received an Award of Excellence at the 2021 Toronto Urban Design Awards. Part of the Elements category, the structure was recognized for being an easily recognizable, important connection in a dense part of the city. The jury noted how the design of the bridge uniquely frames views of the city and how its twisting pattern helps create a dynamic, tactile experience for those using it.
Located at the busy intersection of Yonge and Queen Streets, the CF Toronto Eaton Centre Bridge is a dramatic public landmark that replaces a previous, inaccessible bridge from the 1970s. The design challenge involved carefully considering the contrasting buildings the bridge connects. On one side, a historic, sandstone Romanesque Revival building from the 1890s, and on the other, the postmodern CF Toronto Eaton Centre.
To help minimize disruptions to Queen Street, the bridge’s main structural components were assembled on nearby James Street, and was moved in place by a highly specialized lift system, given the minimal clearances onsite. The bridge is a result of a collaborative effort between architects, designers, and engineers, all of which helped advance this technically complex project.
Congratulations to all of the recipients and honourable mentions of this year’s Toronto Urban Design Awards!
