Public presentation of Block 2 design competition scheduled April 11
April 06, 2022Zeidler in association with David Chipperfield Architects will be presenting our Block 2 design concepts to the public at a live event on Monday April 11 at 10am EST.
Block 2 is a significant site within Canada’s capital directly opposite Parliament’s Centre Block and Peace Tower. Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) launched a design competition in the spring of 2021 to redesign the Block, consisting of a group of buildings bounded by Metcalfe, Wellington, O’Connor and Sparks Streets. The redesign will provide office space for the Senate and the House of Commons and will allow for the future consolidation of parliamentary accommodations, including space for the Library of Parliament. It will also include renovated retail space along the Sparks Street Mall.
The project will transform the aging buildings and two vacant parcels of land. The vision is guided by the goals of design excellence, environmental and social sustainability, and seeks to express the living culture and heritage of Ottawa. Two of the eleven buildings are dedicated for the development of an Indigenous Peoples’ Space. These buildings are not included in the design competition, but Block 2 honours and respects the significance of this space at the heart of the Parliamentary Precinct.
