Bethany Calgary Exterior Rendering

Integrating a small-home model within Bethany’s 420-bed facility bridges the gap between the intimate, individualized care of a small residence and the operational capacity of a major care centre. Our design organizes 14-bed households, each with private rooms and ensuite bathrooms, to form a self-contained home with shared kitchens, dining areas, and living rooms. These adaptable living spaces allow residents to maintain personal expression and privacy while enjoying a close-knit community. Households are grouped into neighbourhoods on each floor, optimizing shared communal spaces and promoting operational efficiency by allowing staff and resources to be easily accessible and within close proximity. This layout co-locates residents with similar care needs, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of care delivery.

Inspired by a city layout, Bethany Calgary’s interior organization incorporates a central spine or main thoroughfare that connects residents to themed neighbourhood floors via a central elevator. Each floor features destination amenities that encourage purposeful wandering and self-directed exploration, fostering a sense of freedom and independence that is rare in senior care environments. The “Main Street” serves as the community’s central hub, where residents can run errands, meet with friends, and participate in daily life. A rooftop pub and event space with expansive city views further enhance the vibrant social scene. Public flex spaces, gardens, and outdoor gathering areas connect Bethany Calgary to the surrounding neighbourhood, strengthening community ties and reducing the isolation often seen in traditional care settings.

Aligned with Bethany Care Society’s values and Zeidler’s commitment to sustainability and wellness, the design incorporates natural materials, biophilic principles, and enhanced lighting to create a calming, home-like atmosphere. The design emphasizes the importance of natural light and views, with floor-to-ceiling windows in common spaces, bringing residents closer to nature, enhancing their overall well-being. The facility’s layout leverages the site’s natural slope and sunlight exposure, minimizing environmental impact while creating inviting outdoor spaces. Public areas feature soothing colour schemes and materials that foster a sense of comfort, providing an environment that feels trusted and familiar.

The redevelopment of Bethany Calgary exemplifies Zeidler’s ability to merge complex operational needs with human-centred design, creating environments where aging adults can live fulfilling, connected lives. Through strategic design and community integration, Bethany Calgary redefines the future of senior care, establishing a compassionate, dignified, and inclusive model for other communities to follow. Zeidler’s collaborative approach, combined with our commitment to innovation and quality of life, has transformed Bethany Calgary into a beacon of progressive senior living.
