Zeidler Timeline 1951–2030

For seven decades, Zeidler Architecture has been a defining force in Canadian architecture. Eberhard Zeidler’s groundbreaking work simultaneously pushed the limits of design and technology, while prioritizing the crux of his architectural expression—the people.

“I’m most proud of the work we’ve done at Zeidler to carry on the Zeidler brand. We believe in it and want to maintain the qualities that made it one of Canada’s top architectural practices while expanding our leadership group to ensure long-term success,” said Vaidila Banelis, Senior Partner.

The qualities Vaidila is referring to are rooted in Eb’s design philosophy. In describing Eb’s approach to architecture, Stefano Pavarini wrote “… Eb Zeidler’s design philosophy and the work of his firm are like a breath of fresh air. His work is inspired by realism or rather reality. … to focus on the real subject of a building, which is not the architecture but man himself, the city and the life that goes on inside it.” Similarly, Christopher Hume wrote, “While designing, he always kept the city and its people in mind, and made his buildings for everyone to enjoy.”

Following Eb’s retirement in 2008, the firm transitioned from having a single namesake partner to embracing a collective approach with multiple partners contributing their diverse expertise to the practice. Significant milestones in our recent growth include our merger with Calgary-based BKDI Architects in 2014, rebranding as Zeidler Architecture in 2017, and the acquisition of Queen’s Quay Architects in 2020.

As we mark our 70th year, we’re reflecting on our national growth and the dedication of our talented team. “We’ve nearly doubled in size over the last few years and we’re still growing,” said Bill Mitchell, Partner. “I’m excited about our people and the emerging leaders within our firm. Their drive is inspiring and is evident in the exciting projects we’re taking on.”

Our work is fuelled by a commitment to quality, collaboration, and creating spaces that connect people. This philosophy is embodied in every project we design and deliver.

We are excited to see what the next 70 years holds for Zeidler Architecture. Regardless of where our journey takes us, we will carry Eb’s philosophy forward and continue designing not monuments to ourselves but places for people to live, work, and enjoy.
