The new projecting entry bay, which features double doors, offers barrier-free access to the conservatory. The new design allows heavy machinery needed for maintenance and programming to enter easily, while also enhancing the connection between the building and its front plaza. In close collaboration with our heritage architect AREA, we ensured that the entrance details stayed true to the original 1909 design.
To improve the building envelope, the overhead glazing of all three domes was replaced with fritted glass panels. RJC conducted thermal and solar studies to determine the placement and intensity of the fritted glass to manage solar heat gain. Upgrades to mechanical and electrical systems improve indoor air quality, support energy-efficient operations, and stabilize indoor temperatures. The refurbishment preserves the defining heritage features of the Palm House while enhancing accessibility and functionality. The restoration ensures the facility remains a vibrant civic space for future generations.
