Celebrating the Toronto Zoo Community Conservation Centre Groundbreaking
June 27, 2024The Toronto Community Conservation Centre includes a new state-of-the-art arrival, entrance and orientation plaza that demonstrates the Zoo’s vision to be Canada’s leader in wildlife conservation designed in association with Jones & Jones Architects and Landscape Architects. The project will be an immersive environment, encouraging exploration by visitors of all abilities. We also worked closely with Two Row Architect as our Indigenous consultant for engagement and to incorporate Indigenous principles into the design. Toronto Community Conservation Centre will become a beacon of conservation science with a river otter habitat and endangered turtle conservation breeding centre to provide an educational gateway for zoo visitors.
In collaboration with the University of Toronto Scarborough, the Toronto Community Conservation Centre will house state-of-the-art labs and classrooms, fostering a unique environment where students, researchers, and the community can connect with nature and each other. We are excited to contribute to a project that bridges conservation science with Indigenous traditional knowledge, supporting the Zoo’s mission of “two-eyed” seeing.
Without the Toronto Zoo and Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservatory’s dedication to fundraising, this project would not be possible. Over $70 million has been raised from individuals, corporations, foundations, and others towards the Toronto Community Conservation Centre and other projects as part of the Toronto Zoo Master Plan.
