Cummings Library and Collaboratory, Mohawk College

Hamilton, Ontario

Design Thinking: Delivered on an aggressive fast-track design and construction schedule, the Cummings Library and Collaboratory defines Mohawk’s relationship with the neighbourhood in a dual role of gateway building and campus student hub. Centered around an innovative double-height bio wall and open feature stairway, the student-focused design promotes social interaction, collaboration, and collegiality that both engage and encourage students to spend more time on campus.

Key Features: Building monitoring systems collect data on energy, water, and fresh air usage which is exposed to Mohawk’s applied technology students as part of an experiential learning program. Hearty native plantings, a hydronic piping system, full-height glazing, daylight, occupancy sensors, and thoughtful selection of materials are examples of sustainable features that have resulted in the building achieving LEED® certification to the Gold level.
