In 13.5%* of Indigenous communities across Canada, the tap water is not safe to drink.

Recognizing the challenges that many experience throughout the holiday season, compounded by the unique circumstances of the past two years, Zeidler is supporting the local food bank in each of the Canadian cities where we have an office. These organizations address the immediate needs in the communities by helping to relieve food insecurity in times of crisis.

One of the most fundamental challenges in Canada today is the lack of sustainable access to safe, clean drinking water for Indigenous Peoples. This year, we have chosen to also support Water First, an organization that is dedicated to working in partnership with Indigenous communities to resolve local water challenges.

The federal government has committed to improving and expanding infrastructure, but infrastructure alone does not provide clean and reliable drinking water. Communities need more young, qualified and local personnel to support solving water challenges independently and for the long term.

Water First works with young Indigenous adults to operate and maintain their drinking water treatment systems and meet their long-term environmental water goals. Through education, training and collaboration, their programs blend traditional knowledge with modern technology to:

  • Train and certify Indigenous people as water operators and water quality analysts;
  • Inspire youth to pursue careers in water science; and
  • Build skills related to monitoring and managing aquatic ecosystems.

Their work is made possible with the support of donors who invest in their approach to education and training. Join us learning more about the Indigenous water crisis and the great work that Water First is doing to support communities in ensuring sustainable access to safe, clean drinking water.

We wish you a wonderful holiday season and very Happy New Year!
