CF Toronto Eaton Centre Bridge receives Award of Merit at 2022 National Urban Design AwardsMarch 11, 2022
The unique structure has been recognized at the RAIC’s biennial event in the Urban Fragments category, which highlights smaller-scale projects that contribute to the betterment of the public realm.
Connecting two buildings with distinct architectural styles in one of Canada’s densest neighbourhoods, the CF Toronto Eaton Centre Bridge is a playful response to the need for an accessible, pedestrian-friendly link in the bustling commercial area. The RAIC’s jury, made up of architects, landscape architects, and planners, noted that “The design of this pedestrian bridge is unique in nature, taking the form of the openings of the existing buildings into consideration. Its architectural design is impressive. The structural design of its elements is accentuated well and create a nice light and shadow within the bridge to enhance the pedestrian experience. Careful attention is given to the lighting of the bridge at night.”
The structure enhances the experience at the pedestrian scale, for both people at street level and those crossing the bridge. Its generous interior dimensions offer the chance for people to pause and peer out onto the surrounding cityscape — allowing it to also play host to artistic performances. The new structure is a unique piece of contemporary architecture, with carefully executed details, the result of a highly collaborative delivery process involving architects, designers, engineers, and contractors.
