Zeidler Architecture celebrates provincial recognition for the Allan Gardens Palm House Restoration—honouring its role in preserving heritage while advancing accessibility, performance, and civic life.

This recognition highlights the project’s role in revitalizing one of Toronto’s most cherished public spaces and affirms the enduring civic and cultural significance of the Palm House as both a historic landmark and a living part of the city. The Ontario Heritage Trust Awards recognize leadership in conserving cultural, natural, and built heritage—positioning the Palm House as a strong example of how thoughtful design can honour the past while supporting the future.

Located in the Heart of Toronto, the Palm House is one of Canada’s last remaining Edwardian-era greenhouses. Originally constructed in 1920 and designed by City architect Robert McCallum, it has long served as a place of connection, bringing together nature, architecture, and community in a unique public setting.

Led by the City of Toronto in collaboration with Zeidler Architecture and heritage consultants Architects Rasch Eckler Associates Ltd. (AREA), the restoration carefully balances conservation with renewal. Defining heritage elements—including the sandstone façade, decorative entablature, finials, and historic glazing systems—were meticulously restored, while targeted upgrades improve accessibility, environmental performance, and long-term resilience.

“The 2025 recipients of the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Awards demonstrate how the conservation of our cultural and natural heritage can strengthen communities and bring people together. Through their dedication, Ontario’s stories, places and landscapes continue to be valued, protected and shared.” — The Honourable Edith Dumont, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario

The latest honour builds on earlier recognition, including the Peter Stokes Award for Large-Scale Restoration at the 2025 Architectural Conservancy Ontario Heritage Awards—further reinforcing the project’s significance within the heritage conservation community.

Today, the Palm House stands not only as a restored historic structure but as a renewed civic destination.

Looking Ahead: Expanding Allen Gardens

Building on this momentum, Zeidler continues to support the Friends of Allen Gardens (FOAG) in advancing its vision for the conservatory’s future. Following the Palm House restoration, the team is contributing to preliminary design work to support grant applications for a potential expansion.

This initiative aims to increase year-round greenhouse space, enhance public programming, and revitalize surrounding parkland, reflecting the needs of a growing and evolving Toronto.

“Working with the Friends of Allan Gardens and the City of Toronto, our client’s design theme was ‘completing the loop’ — linking all the conservatories and allowing visitors to move through the entire collection and remain inside under glass year-round. It’s a relatively simple idea, but it will fundamentally change how people experience Allan Gardens, especially in winter.”
— Rob Eley, Partner, Zeidler Architecture

With strong community support, this vision represents a significant opportunity to invest in civic, cultural, and environmental infrastructure. We encourage our community to learn more, and if moved, to support the petition:
