Who We Are
Zeidler Partnership Architects is a Canadian architectural firm focused on design excellence, innovation and working with clients in a range of complex project types. One of the longest continually running practices in North America, we are based in Toronto, Ontario, and we are an international firm with offices in Calgary (Zeidler BKDI), Victoria, London, Berlin, Beijing, Chengdu, and Abu Dhabi. Senior partner Vaidila Banelis, and partners Rob Eley, Jurgen Henze, Andrea Richardson, and Ping Zhang, lead a dedicated team whose architectural vision is informed by sound practical expertise.
Our ability to create engaging and inspiring buildings has been recognized by more than 160 awards, including eight Governor General’s Medals, Canada’s highest architectural honour, and five legacy Landmark Awards from the Ontario Association of Architects. We celebrate these achievements with our clients and we share with them the ongoing stories as these buildings stand the test of time.
Quality is the foundation of our practice — quality of design, process, and service. We believe that excellent architecture emerges from a project’s physical and social relationships with its surroundings, and from a client’s unique culture. Our goal is to fulfill each client’s functional and economic requirements while evoking a positive response from the people who will use the space. The result is buildings that are a pleasure to own and to be in — buildings that are at once enduring, relevant, and inventive, buildings that contribute to their communities and are catalysts for new ways of thinking.
What We Do
Zeidler Partnership Architects is a full service firm providing master planning, functional planning, and architectural and interior design services. With our decades of practice in Ontario and internationally, Zeidler has seen hundreds of buildings through from concept to completion.
Our portfolio of work exemplifies accessible, sustainable, and evidence-based design through an integrated delivery process. We combine years of experience with the input of clients and collaborators to produce an ongoing portfolio of work that includes civic and academic buildings, commercial and residential properties, healthcare and research facilities, performing arts centres, and hotels and resorts. In addition to the traditional design-bid-build approach, we have successfully completed projects in numerous construction delivery methods, and have served in both compliance and proponent roles in major Public-Private Partnership (P3) infrastructure projects for DBF and DBFM projects.
We dedicate one partner to lead our team through each project and ensure expert continuity. Our approach integrates the partner’s personal and creative vision with the varied and complementary expertise of our team. Our longstanding reputation is founded on the successful and fiscally responsible completion of our buildings, as well as on their enduring quality.
We have assisted a number of commercial and institutional clients with master planning to commence their projects, from initial consideration to comprehensive business cases. Our team follows the requirements of government ministries such as the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC), while for others the focus is on redefining culture, creating a basis for fundraising, or defining a series of phases that will be implemented over a period of time.
We understand the importance of incorporating sustainability strategies into buildings at the very outset of the design. We are committed to upholding sustainable design principles through all stages of the project to ensure that environmental responsibility is embedded in all design and construction decisions. Having completed work in over 35 countries, we bring comprehensive experience with progressive benchmarking and measuring systems, such as BREEAM, Green Star, Green Globes, and LEED, and have successfully completed LEED Platinum and Gold buildings.
Value Added Services
One of the first Canadian firms to adopt Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, Zeidler brings over a dozen years of integrated construction documentation and data extraction for some of Canada’s most significant construction projects: Calgary City Centre, The Bow in Calgary (with Foster + Partners), and the Ryerson Student Learning Centre in Toronto (with Snohetta). We are highly experienced in working across cities and continents to coordinate BIM models with our own offices and those of associated firms. We combine the use of BIM techniques with a selection of low-tech measures such as 1:1 cardboard mockups for client review, and simple diagrams to assist in communication. Visioning workshops, design workshops, and user groups provide clients with an active interface with our teams for focused project development.
How We Work
Using a collaborative process, we help advance the goals and visions of our clients to create landmark buildings that provide enduring value over time. Our partners and senior staff have been with the firm for many years, making Zeidler’s internal working relationships uniquely well established. We also offer well-established working relationships with our clients, consultants, and contractors.
Our studio approach to design and project management focuses on collaboration. Senior staff share ideas and insight and welcome the fresh perspective of our younger design and technical talent. Each project team works under the direction of a partner who is responsible for the project and remains the client's main point of contact through all stages from design to construction completion. Each of our partners has contributed to expanding the firm’s portfolio into its present diverse range of project types. Within our practice we share the sense of accommodation and welcome from hotels and resorts, the responsibility and flexibility required for healthcare, the design innovations for academic and education projects, and the approach for security and safety from embassies or courthouses – these are resources for a vital basis in design thinking.
