Morrison Hall, University College Residence, The University of Toronto

Toronto, Ontario

Client: University of Toronto – University College
Size: 93,000 sq.ft. (9,000 sq.m.)

This residence addition and renovation to Whitney Hall and the Sir Daniel Wilson Residence at University College includes dormitory style accommodation for 277 residents with shared washrooms in clusters of single student bedrooms, grouped in five “Houses”. Each “House” shares a loft style two storey common room with kitchen, music, video and meeting areas. New kitchen facilities and a “Market” style cafeteria servery were added to the existing historic dining hall (Whitney Hall) which was maintained and updated to modern standards. Laundry facilities and a street level café complete the program.

The project is on a very constricted site at the heart of the historic downtown campus. Careful attention to pedestrian flow and view lines informed the design. A new connecting link between the back campus and St. George Street has been maintained and enhanced. The use of materials and detailing that respond to the scale and texture of the surrounding historical fabric carefully links this project to the campus neighbourhood.
