The Faculty of Business Building integrates a large academic program with a retail expansion of the Toronto Eaton Centre. The program includes approximately 220,000 sf of Ryerson facilities, 160,000 sf of retail and mall expansion, and 260,000 sf of parking. The retail occupies the below grade and ground floors, with 3 levels of enclosed parking above. The Ryerson facilities begin on the fifth floor accessed through a grand glass atrium that gives major presence to the business school at ground level.
Within the school levels a communal approach was taken. With a floor plate of over 70,000 sf, and a population of over 5,000, clear orientation was a significant concern. To avoid a complex internal circulation scheme, a large free-form landscaped courtyard was introduced to act as a “village square”. Glazed walkways around the perimeter of the square provide access to most of the teaching spaces allowing students to see and be seen moving between classes. Open study areas surround the square replacing traditional enclosed study rooms.
