Ryerson School of Performance
Client: Ryerson University
Size: 17,400 sq.ft. (1,600 sq.m.)
Located in the award-winning, high-profile Student Learning Centre (SLC), designed by the architectural team of Zeidler and Snohetta, the new purpose-built space for the Ryerson School of Performance features 17,400 square feet of modern and accessible performance, learning, and related support space. The design incorporates the creation of a new mezzanine level within the existing double-height space below grade in the SLC, with a street-level box office accessible off Yonge Street.
Zeidler worked in collaboration with multiple user groups including students and School of Performance faculty members to ensure the new facility reflects Ryerson’s commitment to excellence in performing arts and culture. Students and faculty from the university’s dance program participated in the testing of options for the sprung-floor dance and performance spaces, which feature 75 flexible seating free of sightline obstructions. The program includes two dance studios, rehearsal and performance space, a multipurpose acting studio, a black box performance space with a sound and lighting booth overhead accessible from the mezzanine level, production and teaching wardrobe areas, and a lighting and sound lab.
