Accolade East and West, York University

Toronto, Ontario

Design Thinking: This expansion project provides state-of-the-art teaching, exhibition and performance facilities in two buildings, which frame the existing fine arts complex and complete the central campus courtyard. Enhanced by the use of colour and art, external enclosed walkways connect to the existing pedestrian routes on campus and allow the performance spaces to be located within the interior where the retrained use of windows and the innovative curvature of the walls maintain the integrity of sound within these specialized spaces.

Key Features: The flagship facility includes: a 360-seat theatre boasting generous stage, wings, side stage and backstage space, plus an orchestra pit, fly system and traps; a 327-seat recital hall; a 500-seat cinema equipped with a 40-foot screen, Christie Digital projector and 19-speaker Dolby Digital Surround Sound; two art galleries; and dozens of cutting-edge studios, labs and classrooms. The project was delivered using an innovative fast-track design-build process.
