The redevelopment of BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital, both agencies of the Provincial Health Services Authority, will be completed in three phases. The combined goal of both hospitals is to provide critically needed specialized services to children, women and newborns across British Columbia. Zeidler Partnership Architects is working with HCMA Architects as design lead on the illustrative schematic design for phase two of the development, which includes the building of the new BC Children’s Hospital. The 500,000 s.f. new acute care centre includes a 70-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). It also includes a new emergency department, three floors of inpatient beds (96 inpatient medial/surgical beds and 27 oncology inpatient beds) plus an oncology outpatient and day-care program. It also has a 28-bed paediatric intensive care unit, two surgical suites, sterile processing department and diagnostic imaging department.
As an innovation to the process, the hospital commissioned a full-sized mock-up of the entire seven-storey design which is constructed of cardboard walls to allow user groups to test the design.
